1. Questions and answers

Do I have to be a member in the Medical Sciences Student Union?

  • It's regulated in law that everyone who's a student at high school or university must be a member of a student union. The law says: "The one who's a student at a college of higher learning must be a member of the student union that exist at that college." (SFS 1983: 18 §4)

  • The membership is further regulated through decisions in the board of university to that each individual student must be a member of the student union of the faculty where he/she carry on most of his/her education. For more reading see under the pages over "union office" under "union fees".

Which fees do I have to pay, does it really have to be a cost?

  • Union membership fee: The parliament in Sweden has decided that every student union has the right to take out a union fee to uphold their activity. "Student unions, nations and student societies for the faculty have the right to take out a fee from the students who are members." (SFS 1983:18 §10)

Study material

  • According to the departement of higher education all education should essentially be without fees. "Higher education should be without fees for the students, but some costs can still come concerning study material, travels related to the practical training etc" (the department of higher education rapport 1996:3 R). The cases in which such fees can come in question is regulated by the principal of the University of Umeå. "It mustn't be any fees related to the obligatory moments in any course without having an alternative without fee to offer. Compendiums or other material that the institutions supply must be sold for cost price at the most. No force to buy can exist" (Rules and regulations, Umeå University 1999).

At practical training

  • Costs related to pratical training must be covered by the institution in charge, thought concerns this only costs that has been defined in advance by the institution and the outlays must be shown as agreed. "At travel related to practical training or other studies that are written in the plan for the course the student has a right to certain compensation for travels and lodging" (Rules and regulations, UmU 1999).

When do I have the right to get my schedule for the next course?

  • The university has established that "The plan for the course must under normal circumstances be available at least one month before the start of the course" (Rules and regulations, Umu 1999). Schedule and list of literature must also be available at least one month before the start according to the same regulations. For more reading see Rules and regulations.

2. Where to turn to?

Treated unfarely?

  • Do you feel that you've been treated unfare? Do you feel that you have "got into a jam"? You can always come to the student union for help. Read more on the contact page;

how you can get in touch with us. Yet we always recommend you to try to talk to your teacher, instructor or the one in charge of the course before you come to us.

Problems with your studying

  • If you get problems with your studying are there a number of authorities that you can turn to for help. The easiest way is talk to the one or the ones that are directly concerned in the matter to find a smooth solution.

  • For example if you aren't happy with the teaching or the schedule, you should talk to the one in charge of the course or in charge of the class, there's always a person responsible.

  • You can also turn to your student guidance. Every program at the Faculty of Medicine has persons responsible for student guidance.

There are also a central student guidance that can help you with your worries concerning change of education, acceptance for courses and more.

Graduate students

  • You who are attending a graduate course/education should of course at first turn to your instructor with your questions or problems. If there's a situation where you can't do that should you turn to the head of the university appartement, that's the one in charge of all activity at the institution you're at. If this isn't possible for some reason you can let your questions be taken up in the council of directors of studies that contains five directors of studies who can give you guidance in specific graduate questions.
