Where can I pay the Union membership fee?

The fee can unfortunately not be paid at the Student Union House, but there are many other alternatives: this service is provided at the bank, at the local Post office, through your internet bank account or even through some stores.

Where can I get a personal identity number?

If you haven’t already got your personal identity number, you can get it at the tax Office, not far away from town centre.

Where can I get a student E-mail and CAS-login?

Your E-mail is your CAS-login; that is, the first eight characters (leaving out the @student.umu.se part). You can get this at UMDAC in the MIT-building at campus.

Rules and rights

As a student at Umeå University there are many rules to which you must comply. Disobeying these rules can have serious consequences and may ultimately lead to your expulsion. On the toher hand, as a student you have many rights; here are some of them.

How long in advance should a syllabus, course schedule and literature list be available?

Your syllabus should be available at least four weeks prior to the start of the course via the university’s syllabus finder and course directory. A preliminary course schedule for the first four weeks of study must be available at the department’s homepage at least one month before the course starts.

Is it true that all the scheduled times include compulsory attendance?

If a scheduled lesson is to be considered compulsory, it would have to include a form of exam and be stated in the course schedule. For example, it is not permitted to make lectures compulsory solely in order to increase attendance.

Can the course coordinator/teacher require that I have completed every part of the course before I write my exam?

No, you cannot be denied participation in a test as long as you have followed the university’s rules for examinations, and have not exceeded any limitations regarding the number of re-sits. In the case of examinations that involve a third party or when it is necessary for security reasons, specific parts of the course may have to be completed before you are allowed to take an examination.

Within what time frame should a written exam be corrected?

You should normally receive the result of a test within no more than three weeks after the examination date. Laboratory reports, assignments to be handed in etc. should have been assessed within no more than three weeks after the deadline.

Are exams and examination questions public documents?

Yes, test results are public documents (i.e. official documents). When the time allowed for beginning the test has expired, the examination questions are official. The test results become public documents when the examiner has decided all the students’ grads. The submitted tests are official documents for as long as they are retained at the department.

How close to a regular test may a re-sit be scheduled?

Re-sit time(s) should be announced no later than the day of the regular test. The re-sit should be scheduled no less than ten working days after the result of the first test has been made available to the students.

Can an examination take place on any day of the week?

Test should normally be scheduled day-time on weekdays (Monday to Friday).

Is the teacher/examiner required to provide motivation to his or her assessment?

Yes, you have the right to know why a test has been assessed in a particular way.

If I am unhappy about my grades, can I make an appeal?

As there is no provision for scrutiny by a higher authority, no appeal is possible. However, if you think that your work has been graded incorrectly, you can approach the examiner and ask him or her to reconsider his or her decision.

If I am disappointed with the assessment of my performance, can I change the examiner?

If you have failed the same part of a course twice, you have the right to change examiner. The only exception to this is if special circumstances exist.

What happens if I become ill and cannot complete my studies in time?

If you have a special reason for not being able to complete your studies, the University will guarantee a place for you after the interruption of your studies. However, what you have to do is to submit a written request so that your case can be considered.

What does non-completion of studies mean?

If you do not attend any of the lessons after you have registered on an independent course or a programme, you have, in effect, not begun your studies. If you wish to begin studies at a later date, you will also count as non-completion of studies. If you wish to recommence your course studies, you will have to apply for re-registration. Re-registration is achieved in relation to the availability of admissions.

All these rights can also be found in a brochure at the Student Union House, which you are more than welcome to collect!  If you want more information, please visit the website:
